Traditional students are aged 17 - 24. Non-Traditional students are those age 25 and above. I’m researching the needs of non-traditional students. Are you or have you been a non-traditional student? If so, I’d like to hear about your experience. What were your challenges beyond those of traditional students? What resources were most helpful? What was lacking? any recommendations for colleges or counselors?

I'm not a licensed mental health professional. If you walk into the room, bang your knee and swear, I won't yell, "How long have you hated your parents?!" {That's how one of my high school teachers viewed psychiatrists!) A licensed health professional, such as a psychologist, psychiatrist, or mental health counselor, can help you unearth "why" you feel as you do now. They dig into your past and uncover how it affects you now. A coach looks forward. A coach asks you to answer questions by looking within and answering honestly. We don't (or rarely) tell you what you should do.We help you summarize and articulate your feelings and aspirations. As a job & career coach, I work with people who need to talk to someone about their career aspirations. I also offer practical help, too. I help people with their resume, over letters, LinkedIn profile and more.

One book I think everyone should read is "Start with WHY," by Simon Sinek. Easy to read, with wonderful concepts presented conversationally; so, the ideas are easy to understand and apply. If you start with your WHY, then the listener or reader gets to know and understand your motivation and passion so much more quickly. Your WHY naturally leads into WHAT you are good at. And it will make sense to them. Consider the following LinkedIn About Me section, which a client and I wrote together. Most people who see it, love it, because they can easily discern her motivation, her passion, and her skills. ------------------------------- I grow up in a close family, including six accountants; so, I was exposed to Accounting at an early age. My father taught me about debits and credits, GAAP, and how to follow the rules. By age ten, I knew I wanted to be an accountant. That’s why I today love working with numbers and helping companies with their accounting. Through the years, I gained a strong background in international accounting and my passion became Auditing. I'm great with internal controls, automated billing systems, accounts payable (A/P), accounts receivables (A/R), and reconciliations. I'm energetic, organized, and efficient; good at time-management; and adept at managing multiple tasks responsively. Bosses and colleagues have complimented me for my dedication as a team player. I master new software quickly. Software Skills: Oracle | SAP | Ariba | NetSuite | Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). ------------------------------ What books do you recommend?
