You've seen the contradictory articles.
The first set say, "Companies shut down during the holidays. No one hires."
The other set tell you, "Keep applying. Companies hire all year."
Which set is correct?
The answer is "Both."
The pace may slow generally; some companies may shut down their offices for a week.
But people are still working, and that work includes planning for the next year.
Just as Santa has a list (and checks it twice), the recruiters, HR people, and hiring managers are checking who to bring in for interviews in January.
So, keep applying; keep your name out there; keep networking.
On the other hand, If you've been submitting applications at a steady pace for months, December might be a good time to pause and reevaluate your approach, or simply to take a short break.
Of course, the holiday season is the perfect time to network: Lunches and dinners with friends, or family events are great places to get some AIR--advice, information, and referrals. Seriously, how many people don't have relatives who always offer advice? (LOL!)
In addition, any job seeker networking groups have free holiday get-togethers.
Attend a couple. Network!
Remember the #1 rule: Don't ask for a job.
Instead, acknowledge your situation; talk about your interests. And then ask about them.
This is the season for giving after all.
So, present a smile. Lend them your ears. Offer a helping hand.
Every week someone on LinkedIn or one of my clients relates how a chance conversation led to an opportunity.
If you aren't doing any of this, contact me.
It's time you get started.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
Ed
